VIDIADHAR SURAJPRASAD NAIPAUL

“For sheer abundance of talent there can hardly be a writer alive who surpasses V. S. Naipaul.”
–The New York Times Book Review

"The beautiful things we shall write if we have talent," Proust says, "are inside us, indistinct, like the memory of a melody which delights us though we are unable to recapture its outline. Those who are obsessed by this blurred memory of truths they have never known are the men who are gifted... Talent is like a sort of memory which will enable them finally to bring this indistinct music closer to them, to hear it clearly, to note it down..."....Talent, Proust says. I would say luck, and much labour
V. S. Naipaul, Nobel Lecture 2001

"The sweep of Naipaul's imagination, the brilliant fictional frame that expresses it, are in my view without equal today"
Elizabeth Hardwick in the New York Times Book Review

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2001

V. S. Naipaul

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2001 is awarded to the British writer, born in Trinidad, V.S. Naipaul
“for having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see the presence of suppressed histories”.
V.S. Naipaul is a literary circumnavigator, only ever really at home in himself, in his inimitable voice. Singularly unaffected by literary fashion and models he has wrought existing genres into a style of his own, in which the customary distinctions between fiction and non-fiction are of subordinate importance....Continued at:

V.S. Naipaul – Nobel Lecture
Two Worlds

This is unusual for me. I have given readings and not lectures. I have told people who ask for lectures that I have no lecture to give. And that is true. It might seem strange that a man who has dealt in words and emotions and ideas for nearly fifty years shouldn't have a few to spare, so to speak. But everything of value about me is in my books. Whatever extra there is in me at any given moment isn't fully formed. I am hardly aware of it; it awaits the next book. It will – with luck – come to me during the actual writing, and it will take me by surprise. That element of surprise is what I look for when I am writing. It is my way of judging what I am doing – which is never an easy thing to do. Proust has written with great penetration of the difference between the writer as writer...Continued at

Nobel laureate V. S. Naipaul believes that India is heading for a cultural clash between the city dwellers and the village population.

People in cities are turning their backs to Indian civilization. They want green cards. They want to migrate. They want to go to England. They want to go to the US", Naipaul told media persons at the Centre For Fine Arts, Bozar.  "There is a fracture at this moment of great hope for India. A fracture in the country itself. It is possibly quite dangerous at the moment," and added that the consequences "could be a very radical kind.......Continued at:

Between Father and Son: Family Letters,  By V. S. Naipaul

user posted image

This extraordinary collection of letters gives us, as nothing published previously has, an intimate view of Naipaul's formative years.
It is a story of family members oceans apart, clinging to one another against the sadness of dislocation and isolation: The young Naipaul, desperate not for a degree but to become a writer and make his way in the world. His beloved sister Kamla, anxious and bewildered, away at school in India. And his melancholy but loving father, whose own broken dream of succeeding as a writer would be realized in the singular achievement of his son. With the satisfactions of a novel, Between Father and Son portrays a deeply affecting family drama, even as it bears witness to the flowering of one of the great literary geniuses of the century....Continued at:

Nobel Laureate Sir V. S. NAIPAUL  - On ignoring history
"How do you ignore history? But the nationalist movement, independence movement ignored it. You read the Glimpses of World History by Jawaharlal Nehru, it talks about the mythical past and then it jumps the difficult period of the invasions and conquests. So you have Chinese pilgrims coming to Bihar, Nalanda and places like that. Then somehow they don't tell you what happens, why these places are in ruin. They never tell you why Elephanta island is in ruins or why Bhubaneswar was desecrated."  People in India have only known tyranny. The very idea of liberty is a new idea. Particularly pathetic .....
